I was driving home from going to a movie, (by myself), jamming out to Christmas tunes on the radio last night when I got to thinking about the holiday that commercialism forgot. I have to say a few things however, I love Christmas. I love Christmas time, music, shopping, and everything that comes with it. I am one of the weirdos that starts playing Christmas music the minute it comes on the radio, truth be told I was trying to see if they had it on the day after halloween. I love Christmas.
Thanksgiving, what is the day really all about? We cook a big turkey and eat until we can eat no more. We enjoy the company of our family and watch some football. This would be Thanksgiving in a nutshell for many. Even in my own family I know we take the time and pray but do we take the time to say what we are thankful for? Do we really stop and think about all the things that God has blessed us with in the last year or even that day?
I know that many of my friends are doing 30 days of Thanksgiving and listing something that they are thankful for each day. It's good to remind ourselves what we so often take for granted. I don't remember where I heard it but if you only had what you thanked God for yesterday what would you have? To be honest many days I would have nothing. I take for granted and forget to thank God for what he has blessed me with.
In the past year my life has changed considerably and I didn't know what would happen one day to the next and I was grateful for everything I had. You don't know what you have until it's gone and I feared that what I loved most would be gone. God made a way when I didn't see it and has blessed me.
I am so thankful for:
My kids, they are awesome children, they help me to grow as a person each and every day. They add laughter, tears and joy to my life.
My family, they have been there for me when I thought I was alone in the world, they provide more support than I ever thought I would need.
My friends, I am privileged to have amazing friends. Friends that not only support me but tell me like it is.
My church, each member could be called my friend, there is always support and love.
My youth group, the most awesome group of kids in the entire world, I can't say why because what happens in youth, stays in youth.
My job, I love my job. I spent years not knowing that I was looking for this job all along. I found my place and I am so thankful to have it.
My house, you don't realize how much you miss your own place until you don't have it. I am so grateful to have my own bedroom.
My car, it's paid off and gets me where I need to go, the alarm goes off randomly but it's mine.
Thanksgiving, it's about giving thanks and remembering that what we have is a gift. In a way it's more precious than Christmas time because we don't often reflect on what we've been blessed with. This Thanksgiving with all my family and friends around I will remember that I've been blessed and give thanks.
